"Pasture Prime"
The history of the little Massey is very colorful!
Although the team had many fans, the atmosphere inside the arena
was a different story. The combine was always the best decorated and
definitely reflected a "woman's touch". Their combines were always
beautiful, clever, and were adorned with detailed decorations. And
perhaps if they would have spent more time fine-tuning the combine
instead of making it look so good, they may have won a few derbies!
However, when the combine entered the arena, it appeared to the other
competitors as a huge monstrous machine with a bulls eye painted on it!
If five combines were in the heat, four of them would zero in on the
combine and injure it beyond repair. The little combine would never be able to leave the arena under
its own 'steam'. After 10 years (and ten
Decoration Awards) the busy crew
retired their combine. This particular combine was over-looked for the
best decorated when a combine from Moses Lake (with only a Lion's
Club logo) and a local T-16 combine, won the top prizes in the
decorations category. Not to be poor sports, and after the derby, the
women took the stuffed cow (note picture) and nailed it on the front of
the barn at the Gary Johnson residence (T-16). They were pleased at
their generous gift. It remained there for over a year, collecting rain
and dust, and whatever else was flying through the air at that time.
Visible at nearly every point in Lind, and in a year, it finally
succumbed to the elements and fell to the ground. The
Pasture Prime crew enjoyed the
reminder of the cow and combine that shoulda, woulda, coulda' had the
grand prize for decorations.
The combine was briefly used for advertisement in local parades, and
even made a very short-lived (recent) ‘come-back’ as a participant in
the derby. Presently, is parked in a corner of a field at the Curt Franz
farm and will probably remain there until it is covered by years of dust
storms.
Note: The combine was always sponsored by the Golden Grain Café.
Members of the women’s crew: Driver, Dawn Watson Lobe, Karla Fowles, Robin Kulm, Val Watson, Sidney Wahl, Ruby Koch, Carol Kent, and Carol Kelly. |
And on with the 2010 Derby....
We are still trying to catch our breath after another successful derby. It's
hard to imagine, but every year the derby gets bigger and better! All venues
were 'up' from previous years, making the 2010 derby the best yet. This year,
our Lions Club proudly hosted 18 combines, many who had great distances to
travel in order to participate in the 23rd event. We salute the following 12
towns for their outstanding representation in the derby. Hats off to:
Ritzville, Davenport, Spangle, Basin City, Pasco, Airway Heights, Othello,
Marshal, Diamond, Harrington, Kahlotus, and Lind.
These drivers don't just find and old combine drive it to Lind and participate.
It takes them most of the year to find parts, and then find many hours to donate
to getting the machine up and running. And of course they have to be in
compliance with all the rules and regulations. They participate in combine
meetings throughout the year, and they all work toward their goal of winning a
grand prize. We commend their participation, and hope their home towns recognize
and applaud their representation, too.
We
also salute the drivers who spend their extra time advertising this event for
the Lind Lions Club who take time away from their work to visit radio stations,
pass out advertisements,
and talk about the derby. It is appreciated.
We had a great group of drivers, some new and some seasoned drivers who put on a
terrific show for an appreciative crowd. We also salute Julie Duchow, our first
woman driver in many years. Although it was her first experience, she proved to
be strong competition, and the drivers worked hard to eliminate her from the
final round. The women who participated "oh, so long ago" know the feeling of
being the combine in the arena with an immense bulls eye on the combine...!
